01 / Learn the method
Learning outcomes
Reconcile production cost variances and investigate their causes. Calculate the result, reconcile it and communicate its limitations.
Method
With all materials purchased and used in the same period, material price variance is actual quantity × (actual price - standard price); usage variance is (actual quantity - standard quantity allowed) × standard price. Labour rate and efficiency follow the same pattern. Positive amounts here mean unfavorable cost. If purchase and usage volumes differ, price-variance recognition requires a different explicit convention.
Smaller worked example
For 100 units with standard 2 kg at $5/kg, actual use 220 kg at $6/kg costs $1,320. Standard allowed cost is $1,000. Price variance $220 plus usage variance $100 reconciles to $320 adverse.
Sign convention: positive cost variances are adverse; negative cost variances are favourable. Apply this convention consistently to the component variances and reconciliation.
02 / Put it to work
Business context and rules
Fictional Ridge Manufacturing, September 2026. Output 1,000 finished units. Standard material 2 kg/unit at $5/kg; actual 2,200 kg purchased and fully consumed at $5.50/kg. No opening or ending raw materials, work in progress or scrap recovery. Standard labour 0.5 hours/unit at $20/hour; actual 540 hours at $22/hour. Operations cites overtime and a supplier change, without proof of which effects they caused.
Original synthetic inputs
| Input | Value | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Finished output | 1000 | units |
| Standard material per unit | 2 | kg / unit |
| Standard material price | 5 | USD / kg |
| Actual material consumed | 2200 | kg |
| Actual material price | 5.5 | USD / kg |
| Standard labour per unit | 0.5 | hours / unit |
| Standard labour rate | 20 | USD / hour |
| Actual labour hours | 540 | hours |
| Actual labour rate | 22 | USD / hour |
Required deliverables
Prepare four variance calculations and a total-cost reconciliation. Write three evidence requests to Procurement / Operations / Payroll and distinguish rate, usage and efficiency observations from causal claims.
Use formulas for derived amounts and preserve source data. Put narrative deliverables in the workbook response area; expand it as needed. Compare amounts within 0.01 of the stated unit and percentages within 0.1 percentage point. No unsupported balancing plugs.
Workbook structure
The student workbook intentionally leaves the analysis structure open. Build the schedules required above, retain the source inputs, and add formula-based checks. You may add worksheets. The worked solution is one acceptable structure, not the only correct layout.

Worked numerical schedule
| Measure | Value | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard material allowed | 2,000.00 | kg |
| Material price variance | 1,100.00 | USD |
| Material usage variance | 1,000.00 | USD |
| Material cost difference | 2,100.00 | USD |
| Standard hours allowed | 500.00 | hours |
| Labour rate variance | 1,080.00 | USD |
| Labour efficiency variance | 800.00 | USD |
| Labour cost difference | 1,880.00 | USD |
| Total adverse production cost variance | 3,980.00 | USD |
| Variance reconciliation residual | 0.00 | USD |
Interpretation and recommended actions
Material price $1,100 adverse and usage $1,000 adverse sum to $2,100. Labour rate $1,080 and efficiency $800 sum to $1,880. Total adverse cost is $3,980. Ask Procurement for supplier and freight rates, Operations for yield and rework logs, Payroll for overtime and grade mix. A supplier change does not establish the source of excess usage; rate changes can reflect staff mix as well as wage rates.
Scoring rubric - 100 points

| Controls / audit trail | 20 | Traceable formulas 8; independent reconciliation 8; explicit units and signs 4. |
| Communication | 15 | Decision and numerical headline 5; actions with owners and evidence 5; concise response covering all required deliverables 5. |
Award method credit after an isolated arithmetic error rather than repeatedly deducting for it. Equivalent account labels and well-supported alternative recommendations are acceptable. Numerical tolerance is 0.01 in the stated units; no universal passing score is prescribed.
Common mistakes
Using budget output instead of actual output for allowed quantity; applying standard quantity to price variance; labeling all adverse cost as waste.
Staged hints
Start with actual output × standard usage. Use actual quantity for price and actual hours for rate. Check against actual total cost less standard allowed cost.
Instructor notes
Prerequisites: Standard costing basics. The total duration of 60-75 minutes is a planning estimate, not a tested completion time. Allocate class time according to prior knowledge and reserve time for discussion of the decision and evidence.
For a simpler class, provide the model structure and work through one driver. For an extension, change one operational assumption and require a new reconciliation and recommendation. Verify the new key before distributing any variant. Open files in the intended spreadsheet application before class. Solutions are learning resources, not secure hiring examinations.
Decision
Investigate purchasing prices, material usage, labour rates and efficiency separately before assigning responsibility.
Evidence and reasoning
The variance bridge isolates arithmetic effects, not their causes. Overtime, grade mix, yield and freight can affect different lines and require different evidence. Positive variances are adverse in this case.
What would change the conclusion
Supplier invoices, production/yield records and payroll mix can support or reject each hypothesis. A supplier change alone does not establish the cause of waste.
